Breed Information
Yorkshire Terriers are the belles of the ball, dressed in glossy, long-flowing coats and just begging for a good pampering! If you are looking for an alert, spirited pup to pamper, then a Yorkie is for you – they love the attention as much as their coat requires it!
SIZE
This toy dog weighs up to 3.2kg and stands at about 18cm. Being so small and lively, the Yorkshire Terrier will burn up enough energy running around indoors, making them an ideal breed for apartment dwellers.
COAT
The Yorkshire Terrier has a moderately long and perfectly straight coat with a fine silk texture in the colours of rich golden tan on the head and chest, with dark steel blue on the body. A healthy Yorkie will have a glossy coat that is low-shedding.
CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
The Yorkie is an alert little terrier with intelligence and looks to boot. Playful, affectionate and just a little bit cheeky, these tiny bundles have big personalities.
Unfortunately, their tiny size and fragile bones make for an unsuitable pet for small children. However, a Yorkie is a wonderful lapdog companion for aged or invalid people and those who especially enjoy pampering their pooch.
With its terrier instincts still in tact, the Yorkshire Terrier can act as an excellent watchdog and will happily alert you of potential intruders.
CARE
The Yorkshire Terrier coat is high-maintenance to say the least. Expect to spend up to half an hour a day on brushing and giving weekly baths. If the coat is left unattended, it will quickly matt and knot. Clipping is an option, but if the coat is left to grow, the hair on the head should be held back with a bow to keep it out of the eyes and food bowl!
With such a loyal disposition and a strong desire to be pampered and loved, the Yorkshire Terrier isn’t suitable to be left alone for long periods of time.
TRAINING
While being of an intelligent breed, Yorkies are often very stubborn when it comes to training. As such, obedience should begin at a young age and will require you to be patient and very persistent. Yorkshire Terriers learn best when given training every day with a focus on one command at a time.
ACTIVITY
The tiny Yorkshire Terrier will tire itself out just bounding about the house all day but will benefit from regular walks and playing outdoors with other dogs for socialization.
