Breed Information

Toy Poodles are very elegant in appearance. They have a long, narrow muzzle, dark eyes, and wide flat ears. Toy Poodles have flat backs, and small, oval feet, creating the illusion of walking on their tip toes.

SIZE

Toy Poodles have a shoulder height of up to 25 cm and weigh 3-4 kg. Their length is approximately the same as their height.

COAT

The Toy Poodle has a distinctive fine, frizzy, wooly coat similar in texture to sheep's wool. Toy Poodles do not shed, making them a good match for allergy sufferers. Solid white and black coats are most common, but Toy Poodles can also be solid silver, brown, apricot, blue or red.

For show poodles there are three distinct grooming styles; puppy clip, continental clip, and English saddle clip. All show clips require heavy maintenance, thus pet clips commonly entail shorter hair over the body, leaving longer hair on the head, the ears, and the legs.

CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT

Toy Poodles are lively, playful dogs that are intelligent, keen to learn, but sensitive, and they bond closely with their owner and family.

Poodles do not like to be left alone for hours on end. They love being around people and will quite happily follow you from room to room as you move through out the house.

CARE

Show dogs have to be clipped out according to the breed style. This requires considerable skill and knowledge and is best left to a profession­al specialist salon. Keeping a dog in this condition requires not only considerable time but also costs a great deal of money. Poodles that are kept as pets are usually closely trimmed, leaving longer hair on the head, the ears, and the legs. The grooming requirements for these house hold pets is considerably easier than with show dogs. Check the teeth for tartar and clean the ears regularly. Poodles can be washed quite often.

TRAINING

Miniature and Toy Poodles are very intelligent dogs, which if handled properly, quickly learn what is required of them. The best results are achieved with a gentle but consistent approach.

ACTIVITY

Although these Poodles can happily live in an apartment or townhouse, they still need to get sufficient exercise and love a good run around outside.
