Breed Information
With a striking wolf-like appearance, piercing eyes and playful attitude, the Siberian Husky quickly melts the hearts of those who get to know them. Their athletic build and boundless energy makes the Husky an excellent companion for active individuals and dog sports enthusiasts.
SIZE
The male Siberian Husky stands at 53.5-60cms and weighs between 20kgs and 27kgs. The female stands at 51-56cms and weighs 16-23kgs. This breed is not suitable for small spaces and requires a large yard and owners who are prepared to provide over an hour of exercise each day.
COAT
The Siberian Husky has a double coat where the undercoat is soft and dense, and the hair of the outer-coat is straight, and lies somewhat smooth. The undercoat sheds during the warmer months. They come in colours ranging from black to pure white.
CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
Gentle, friendly and affectionate, the Siberian Husky will quickly become a valued member of your family. Alert and outgoing, they socialize well with other dogs and, provided they are introduced to them while still a young pup, are tolerant of children.
The Husky requires a lot of patience and consistent training, lest they become dominant and stubborn. Be aware that they may develop “dominant strategies” in an effort to move up the “pack ladder” of your family. Make sure that everyone knows where the boundaries lie and are equipped with effective ways of showing your Husky who’s in charge.
Not possessive or overly suspicious of strangers, the Husky doesn’t make for an excellent guard dog, but their sheer size alone can scare off potential intruders.
CARE
During the warmer months, the Siberian Husky will shed its winter undercoat and leave spectacular amounts of hair about your home! During this time, it is essential to brush your Husky daily. Throughout the rest of the year, minimal grooming is required and brushing every few days will suffice.
To stay fit and happy, the Siberian Husky needs to run. Exercise is essential to the well-being of this breed and at least an hour of intense activity is necessary.
TRAINING
It is of utmost importance to take your Husky to obedience training as early as possible. Somewhat difficult to train and easily bored, you will need patience, perseverance and creative ideas to curb your Husky’s natural independence and stubbornness.
The most important command for your Husky to learn is to come when called – given any chance, this independent, confident dog will bound off to fulfill its natural desire to run.
ACTIVITY
To stay fit and healthy, Siberian Huskies need to run... A lot. Without a daily exercise regime, your Husky will become petulant, destructive and moody. Best suited to high-energy families who will take their pooch on excursions, the Husky excels at all outdoor activities – running being their specialty! Dog sports and training such as sledding, weight pulling and backpacking will scratch your Husky’s itch for plenty of exercise.
This breed will try its best to escape if left alone to grow bored.
