Breed InformationShar Pei are active, alert and affectionate dogs entirely devoted to their owners. They are squarely built with loose skin that can appear as a frowning expression. The eyes should be clear, almond shaped & free of any interference. The wrinkle folds of skin are most obvious during the puppy years of this breed. A common misconception is that Shar Pei require an abundance of special treatment to care for their wrinkles; this is not at all the case. SIZE The shoulder height of these dogs is between 46 – 51cm with a weight of approximately 20kg. Shar Pei are perfectly suited to both indoor living and out. COAT The Shar Pei has a harsh coat which stands off the body. The length of the coat can vary from short and bristly to slightly longer and thicker. This breed sheds twice a year. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT Shar Pei are a calm, independent breed and are highly affectionate and loyal to their owners. Shar Pei may appear aloof and wary in the presence of strangers, but when surrounded by their family they are a confident and dignified breed. CARE The coat does not require frequent attention if your Shar Pei is fed a correct diet. Once bathed a quick towel dry is all that is required. The wrinkles should be checked frequently to avoid irritation. TRAINING Their high level of intelligence and eagerness to please their owner makes training this breed a delight. Shar Pei excel at obedience work and thoroughly enjoy the attention from their owner. ACTIVITY The exercise requirements of Shar Pei are moderate, however they should have access to an outdoor area where they can play and roam as they please.
