Breed InformationThe Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large, strong, muscular and highly active dog. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is still used to hunt game in many parts of the world, but is especially prized as a watch-dog and a family pet. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is presently the only registered breed indigenous to southern Africa. Its forebears can be traced to the Cape Colony of southern Africa where they crossed with the early pioneers' dogs and the semi-domesticated, ridged Hottentot hunting dogs. Hunting mainly in groups of two or three, the original function of the Rhodesian Ridgeback or Lion dog was to track game, especially lion, and, with great agility, keep it at bay until the arrival of the hunter. The original standard, which was drafted by F.R. Barnes, in Bulawayo, Rhodesia, in 1922, was based on that of the Dalmatian and was approved by the South African Kennel Union in 1926. SIZEThe desirable heights for Rhodesian Ridgebacks for males is 63-69cm and females 61-66cm. The desirable weight for males is 36.5kg females 32 kg. COATThis dog's coat is short, thick and glossy and sheds moderately. The colour of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is light wheaten to red wheaten. The ridge is the feature of the breed. The ridge should be clearly defined, symmetrical and tapering towards the haunch. It should start immediately behind the shoulders and continue to the hip bones. The ridge should contain only two crowns, identical and opposite each other. The lower edges of the crowns should not extend further down the ridge than one-third of its length. A good average width of the ridge is 5 cm. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENTThe Rhodesian Ridgeback is a loyal, intelligent, brave and independent type of dog. They get along well with other dogs and household pets if they are socialised at a young age. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are dignified and intelligent, aloof with strangers, but show no aggression or shyness. CAREFortunately, this dog's coat does not trap dirt well so it is generally clean and easy to groom. Wiping your dog down with a washcloth will be enough to remove any dead hair and surface dirt. Bathing should only be done when it is really needed. TRAININGTraining this breed can be difficult because they are known to be stubborn and willful. Nevertheless, a gentle and consistent training approach will work best for this breed. ACTIVITYThe Rhodesian Ridgeback has great stamina and an endless supply of energy. They require more than the usual amount of exercise involved with keeping a dog. They enjoy long daily walks, jogging and running, and all sorts of physical activities.
