Breed Information
Strikingly similar to a Poodle in appearance, the Portuguese Water Dog has only a haircut in common with the French breed. The Portuguese Water Dog originated as a “fisherman’s dog”, used to dive under and retrieve nets, herd schools of fish and carry messages between the shore and fishing boats. Now days this loyal, energetic and obedient dog make for an excellent family companion.
SIZE
The male Portuguese Water Dog stands at 50-57cms tall and weighs between 19kg and 25kg. The females are 43-52cms tall and weigh 16-22kgs. Given their energy needs, a decent sized yard is recommended.
COAT
The profuse coat of the Portuguese Water Dog comes in two variations – long, loosely waved hair and short, compact curls. Both variations come in black, white and brown or combinations of black and white, or brown and white.
With a minimal shedding coat, this breed is a great choice for those with allergies to dog hair.
CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
Portuguese Water Dogs thrive on human affection and have a desire to please. This eagerness to impress combined with their high intelligence makes them easy to train.
If introduced to children and other pets as a puppy, they will happily accept them as part of the “pack”.
Tireless in their energy, this breed requires great exercise and, as the name suggests, they most enjoy swimming and diving – they even have webbed feet!
CARE
It is essential to give the Portuguese Water Dog’s coat a regular brushing, several times a week in order to prevent matting. If you intend to show your Portuguese Water Dog, regular visits to a professional groomer will be essential.
With such a strong desire for human company, this breed doesn’t do well when left alone for long periods of time.
TRAINING
Being eager to please and highly intelligent makes the PWD an easily trainable dog. Obedience training should begin at an early age. Consistent, reward-based training is the best method for these affection-lovers.
ACTIVITY
This breed has tireless energy and needs plenty of exercise to stay fit and happy. The best exercise is, of course, swimming and diving, but the Portuguese Water Dog will be happy with a daily run around an off-leash park and some interactive play.
Restless when bored, the Portuguese Water Dog will try to escape if left alone and unexercised.
