Breed InformationThe Pekingese is a toy dog that originally hails from China. For many centuries, this breed of dog sat in the laps of Chinese royalty and roamed freely about their castles and palaces. These small dogs are characterised by their long, flowing hair, wide and flat heads and faces, dark eyes, dark and wrinkled muzzle, and hanging, heart-shaped ears. SIZE Both the male and the female Pekingese stand about 15-23 cm in height and weigh around 3-5 kg. They are best suited for apartment living and can stand cold weather, but cannot tolerate heat. COAT This dog has a long, flowing coat that comes in all colors. It is a moderate shedder. The outer coat is coarse-textured and the inner coat is thick and soft. Its coat should always be straight and never curly. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT The Pekingese is stubborn, independent, brave and courageous, despite its size. They love to bark especially if they feel that something is out of the ordinary, making them effective watch dogs. They are also regarded as lap dogs and can be content lounging around and sitting the whole day. They also have a self-centered nature and will feel jealous if they think that they are not getting enough attention. CARE This breed requires a lot of grooming. Its coat should be brushed several times a week to keep it clean and healthy. Regular trimming of the coat is required to keep it in good shape. Bathing is necessary once or twice a month. The eyes, ears and face should be cleaned often. TRAINING Basic obedience training should be done at an early age because the Pekingese is stubborn by nature. They do not respond well to authoritative and demanding commands but adore praise and recognition. ACTIVITY Pekingese are lazy dogs and they would much rather sleep and sit around. A little play time every now and then is good exercise for them. Walking them around should be done at night or in cool weather.
