Breed InformationThe Newfoundland is perfectly described by the phrase "Gentle Giant.” They have a big, broad head, ears that hang close to their face, small, deep-set eyes, and a large, heavy-boned frame covered in a coarse and thick coat. SIZE This dog stands anywhere between 56-76 cm and weighs around 50-69 kg. Newfoundlands are in fact fine in a small living space as long as they are given enough daily exercise. COAT This breed has a double coat which is water-resistant and sheds moderately. The topcoat is medium-length, coarse, flat, and greasy. The undercoat is soft and dense. Possible coat colours include black, gray, brown, and white. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT The Newfoundland is a gentle and affectionate breed known for their friendliness towards people and other animals. They get along well with children, other dogs and pets. Nevertheless, smaller children should be supervised around them simply because of their massive size. They do not adapt well to changes in living conditions especially if they have grown accustomed to living in a particular home for a long time. CARE The Newfoundland requires frequent brushing of their coat. Twice a year, during spring and Autumn, their undercoat sheds and special attention must be paid during these times. Your Newfoundland should only be bathed when really necessary so as not to strip the coat of its natural oils. TRAINING This breed is very sensitive to the tone of their trainer's voice. They will not respond well to harsh and heavy-handed training methods. It is highly recommended for your Newfoundland to undergo training and socialization from an early age. Slow-paced and repetitive training methods coupled with positive reinforcement will work best for this dog. ACTIVITY This dog requires a substantial amount of non-strenuous exercise. They enjoy swimming, daily walks, playing, and running around the backyard.
