Breed Information
The most popular of the Schnauzer trio, the Miniature Schnauzer is an adorable, pint-sized dog with a big personality. They are well loved for their bushy eyebrows, ever-wagging tail, and happy-go-lucky attitude.
SIZE
The male Miniature Schnauzer should be 36cm and the female 33cm tall, weighing about 7kg. Such a small size makes the Miniature Schnauzer a great breed for indoor living.
COAT
The Miniature Schnauzer’s coat comes in salt-and-pepper, pure black, or black with silver markings. The coat is harsh, wiry and short, with a dense undercoat, prominent eyebrows and an adorable moustache.
Their hair sheds so little that a common myth is that they do not shed at all.
CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
A playful, mischievous tail-wagger, the Miniature Schnauzer’s sense of fun will keep you on your toes and your house full of joy. Their comical appearance and desire to entertain makes for an adorable little dog.
If socialized with children and other pets at a young age, the Miniature Schnauzer will have no problem becoming an affectionate member of your family. However, they are naturally wary of strangers and will guard against anyone they see as an “intruder”. Because of this nature, they do make for excellent watchdogs but will need to be taught the difference between friend and foe.
CARE
To keep your Schnauzer looking in optimum show condition, you will need a professional dog groomer to spend at least 3-5 hours stripping the coat, two to three times a year, and then have it regularly clipped. The result is stunning and well worth the effort.
Pet owners generally keep their Miniature Schnauzers’ coats under control by having them clipped every six to eight weeks, including around the nose and mouth to stop the hair from impairing vision or eating. Keeping your Schnauzer groomed in this manner can cause the outer coat to become softer over time.
This breed thrives on human companionship and will become depressed and destructive if left alone for long. If it were up to your Miniature Schnauzer, it would accompany you everywhere!
TRAINING
The Miniature Schnauzer matures quicker than the other varieties and is said to be of mental maturity at its first birthday – therefore, it’s essential to undertake obedience training and proper socialization at an early age.
It’s important to keep the boisterous, mischievous nature of the Miniature Schnauzer in check with obedience classes and regular training sessions.
As intelligent little dogs, it doesn’t take long for the Miniature Schnauzer to pick up commands and they enjoy regular bouts of training as part of their daily routine.
ACTIVITY
The little Schnauzer can use up most of its energy romping about the house, but will benefit greatly from short walks and play in an off-leash park or backyard. Toys and obedience training are great mental stimulation. If left to grow bored, this breed will do its best to escape or destroy its surroundings - so be sure to spend plenty of time keeping your Miniature Schnauzer entertained!
