Breed InformationThe Maltese is said to be one of the oldest dog breeds around and is considered the oldest European toy dog breed in existence. They have a regal and graceful demeanor and were a favoured companion of royalty, noblemen, and aristocrats. SIZE This dog measures 20-25 cm in height and weighs 2-3 kg on average. It is the perfect pet for apartment living. COAT This dog has an elegant coat of long, silky white hair that sheds very lightly. Some have cream, lemon, or light tan markings on the ear area. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT The Maltese is a good-natured, happy, energetic, playful, friendly, and sociable dog. They like being the center of attention at home or in shows. They get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. This breed will bark at strangers at first but will get used to them quickly. They can be over-protective of their master and family and have a tendency to bark if they perceive a threat. CARE This dog needs to be bathed on a regular basis and its coat needs to be brushed everyday. Their eyes should be checked and cleaned often to prevent tear stains. TRAINING This breed is a fast learner and will quickly learn new tricks and skills to please their master. ACTIVITY This dog does not require a great deal of exercise. A daily walk and indoor activities are enough to meet their exercise needs.
