Breed Information

The Jack Russelll Terrier is a strong, lively and alert dog of great character. Their body is of medium length and is extremely flexible. Jack Russells have a spring in their step and move with a distinctly true and free air about them. Their smart movement is an ideal match to their keen expression.

SIZE
This dog has an average shoulder height of about 25 -30 cm and weighs about 5-6 kg. They are an easy size to manage indoors but must have access to a fenced garden where they can burn some of their seemingly endless energy.

COAT
Jack Russells can have one of three different coat types, smooth, rough or broken.

• Smooth-haired which is thick and smooth hair about 1 cm long
• Rough-haired which is a double coat of up to 10 cm in length
• Broken coated which is a combination of the first two types.

The most predominate colour of the coat should be white with black and/or tan markings. The tan makings can vary from the lightest tan to deep rich chestnut tan.

CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
The Jack Russell Terrier is a brave, boisterous, observant, and self-confident dog. They are extremely intelligent and highly alert. They are a good match for someone with an ample supply of patience and exuberance. Jack Russells get along well with children, other dogs, and other household pets; however, this breed also tends to chase animals that they perceive as prey. This breed should be socialised when young and may have a tendency to be dominant over other dogs, regardless of size. Jack Russells are bold and fearless, yet friendly and quietly confident.

CARE
The Jack Russell is relatively low maintenance. They just need to be brushed once a week and bathed only when necessary. The rough-haired coat will require more grooming than the smooth-haried or broken–haired coat.

TRAINING
Although this dog learns quickly and easily, they will still try to have their own way. They require patience and consistency in training, are sensitive to tone of voice, and are receptive to affection and attention. 

ACTIVITY
This breed is a bundle of energy and must be given every opportunity to burn it off. They need to run, play, catch, fetch and exercise their agility skills. They need access to a backyard where they can frolic around and have fun whenever they feel like it. A FULLY fenced yard is an absolute necessity and it is important that you check the fence regularly for signs of little houdini’s trying to dig their way out.
