Breed InformationThe Irish Water Spaniel is considered as the "clown" of the Spaniel breed of dogs. They are the largest, oldest, as well as the most rare breed of Spaniel these days. They are a tall and stout dog, covered in dark curls of hair. They have almond-shaped eyes, long and low-set ears, and a level tail, which is thick and curly at the base. SIZE This dog stands at about 51-59 cm and weighs 20-30 kg. The best living conditions for this breed require an average-sized backyard and a ideally a place where they can swim. COAT This dog has a coat consisting of dense, permanent curls of hair (as opposed to fur) that is somewhat oily in texture. The coat comes in colours such as deep puce, dark brown or purple-tinged dark liver. This breed is an excellent match for people with allergies, as they shed very little. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT The Irish Water Spaniel is a lively, cheerful, intelligent, and independent breed of dog. They have a clown-like and funny reputation because of their silly, warm-hearted antics. The Irish Water Spaniels are not friendly to strangers, making them a good watchdog. This breed gets along well with other dogs and pets. CARE The coat of this dog requires brushing and combing several times a week, but take note that excessive grooming will cause the coat to fluff. Ideally they should be sprayed lightly with water or allowed to swim after brushing to help retain the coat's naturally curly texture. TRAINING: This dog should be trained at an early age with a firm and consistent approach. Obedience training is highly recommended. They are smart and good problem solvers. ACTIVITY This breed has high exercise needs. They love to swim and retrieve, and require a minimum of an hour a day of these two activities. They also enjoy running freely at parks.
