They have balanced, elegant, medium to large-sized frames covered in silky red coats that grow long on the ears, tail and chest. They have lean heads with long muzzles, almond shaped eyes, dark noses, elegant necks that slope down to deep chests and tails that are usually carried horizontally. SIZE This dog measure about 61-71 cm in height and weighs around 25-34 kg. Because of their size, Irish Setters require an open space to roam about, a medium sized back yard is fine. COAT This dog's coat is long, flat and has very few curls. For purebreds, the coat colour should be rich chestnut, without a trace of black, but white markings are common. Irish Setters shed moderately. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT The Irish Setter is lively, energetic, playful, and independent. They gets along well with children, other dogs, and any household pets, and will enthusiastically welcome visitors. They love family time and form strong bonds with their owners. They will be calm, happy and trainable, as long as they have an outlet for this exuberant energy. CARE Regular clipping and trimming is essential with the Irish Setter. Since the Irish Setter is prone to ear disease, the ears should be checked for any signs of infection regularly. TRAINING Irish Setters are intelligent and alert and have an ability to solve problems and think independently. They do not need continuous repetitive instruction and will often learn commands within one or two training sessions. ACTIVITY This breed needs a lot of exercise to burn off excess energy. One long walk daily is sufficient to keep your Irish Setter in shape.
