Breed InformationIn Australia, the vast majority of greyhounds are bred for racing, but there are also some show line greyhounds. If you are after a pet greyhound, there are many ex-racing greyhounds available that make superb pets. SIZE This dog has a height of 60-75 cm and range in weight generally between 24 and 35kg. Females are likely to be smaller than the males. They can tolerate living in a confined space and thrive on companionship either with people or another dog. COAT Greyhounds have a sleek fine coat that may thicken up if the dog is not kept warm in winter. They come in blue, black, dun, various shades of fawn, red fawn and blue fawn, in solid colours, or with a brindle pattern, in addition there may be varying amounts of white on the dog ranging from white tipped toes all the way through to an almost totally white dog. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT The Greyhound is a sighthound and a sprinter. They are bred for speed and high prey drive to chase after a lure (a large fluffy dog toy) around a race track. They are capable of reaching speeds up to around 72km/h. As sprinters, they have very little stamina and are not able to cope with too much exercise. They are best described as exceedingly lazy. Most of their time is spent resting and conserving energy. Race bred greyhounds have been extremely well socialised with other dogs, and used to being handled. Greyhounds obtained through reputable rehoming programs (Such as the Greyhound Adoption Program) will have been socialised and assessed as being suitable for living with other dogs of all breeds, and many are suited to living with cats and other small animals. Young greyhounds can be a little boisterous and mouthy, but mature greyhounds are extremely placid and graceful. They lack guarding instinct and tend to be friendly towards all people. They make an ideal housepet and companion to take on short walks. Greyhounds are a very loving dog and they bond easily to new owners. CARE The coat is low shedding and requires minimal attention. Greyhounds do not have a lot of natural oil on their skin, so should not be bathed too frequently. They have little or no odour. Normally the only grooming necessary is with a rubber mitt, but at the end of winter the coat may require some extra attention with a stripping comb to remove any undercoat. Greyhounds require a high quality diet with large raw bones to keep their teeth clean. TRAINING Greyhounds are very easy to house train and settle into a routine very easily. They are quick to learn house rules, and their soft nature means that they do not require harsh discipline. This dog is an independent thinker, and may require a little extra motivation to perform well in formal obedience training. They are extremely inactive around the house so are very easy to live with without having to do a lot of training. ACTIVITY The muscle structure of the greyhound is suited to sprinting, the muscles use all the stored energy in one go, and they do not have reserves to keep up activity for extended periods. This means that a walk of between ten minutes and half an hour a few times a week is sufficient exercise for a greyhound unless a high fitness level for racing is required. Greyhound living in homes with no yard may require daily exercise. Many are ideally suited to living in high density housing as they rarely bark and are suited to living in confined spaces. Greyhounds should be kept on lead at all times unless they are in a fully fenced yard.
