Breed Information
Mischievous, playful and loyal – the Giant Schnauzer is a big ball of love that thrives on human companionship. With a stunning coat and spirited attitude, the Giant Schnauzer is likely to turn heads wherever it goes!
SIZE
The male Giant Schnauzer stands at 65-70cm, while the female is between 60cm and 65cm tall. They weigh between 36kg and 50kg and the large size of this variety makes it unsuitable for constant indoor living - access to a backyard is essential.
COAT
Schnauzers come in two colours – pure black and salt-and-pepper, with a dark mask on the face. The coat is harsh, short and is wiry to the touch, with harsher hair on the legs. Even as such a big dog, the Giant Schnauzer sheds very little.
CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
Affectionate, intelligent and playful – the Giant Schnauzer makes for a great family companion and gets along well with other pets and children if introduced at a young age. However, they can be boisterous and clumsy, so it’s recommended to supervise your Giant Schnauzer around small children.
They absolutely adore human company and will follow you wherever you go – a perfect companion for bush walks and picnics. If you are looking for an affection friend with a joyful attitude, then look no further than the Giant Schnauzer.
Due to their boldness and alert nature, they can also act as effective watchdogs but will need to be taught to distinguish between strangers and friends.
CARE
To keep your Schnauzer looking in optimum show condition, you will need a professional dog groomer to spend at least 3-5 hours stripping the coat, two to three times a year, and then have it regularly clipped. The result is stunning and well worth the effort.
Pet owners generally keep their Giant Schnauzers’ coats under control by having them clipped every six to eight weeks, including around the nose and mouth to stop the hair from impairing vision or eating. Keeping your Schnauzer groomed in this manner can cause the outer coat to become softer over time.
Due to their intelligence and loyalty, this breed does not respond well to being left alone for long periods of time. You will need to keep your Schnauzer entertained with plenty of toys if it’s to spend time on its own in the backyard, or it will quickly become bored and destructive.
TRAINING
Giant Schnauzers respond very well to training due to their willingness to please. It’s important to start your Schnauzer at obedience training at an early age to curb its natural tendencies to be boisterous and stubborn.
In order to maintain an obedient attitude, short bouts of training should be part of your Schnauzer’s daily routine.
ACTIVITY
With such a large build, the Giant Schnauzer would benefit from life with an active family with a large back yard. Daily walks are essential and your Schnauzer will appreciate time at an off-leash park for romping and socialization. If left unaccompanied in the backyard, the Schnauzer will become bored, depressed and likely to make an escape attempt – this is a breed to bring into your heart and home.
