Breed Information
The Bloodhound is characterised by solemnity, wisdom and power, largely due to their noble and dignified expression. Famous for their phenomenal sense of smell, this breed is said to have the ability to follow a scent up to 5 days old. To this day Bloodhounds are trained in Australia to track lost children and adults. They have large, narrow heads with long, thin ears soft to the touch.
SIZE
The Bloodhound stands between 58-69 cm in height and measures about 36-50 kg in weight. This breed will quite happily spend time indoors, but still require a well-fenced yard where they can roam.
COAT
The Bloodhound’s coat is smooth, short, dense, and weather-resistant. Their skin is loose around the head and neck where it hangs in deep folds. Coat colours can include combinations such as black and tan, liver and tan, or red. A little white colour on the chest, the toes and at the tip of the tail is sometimes visible as well. This breed is an average shedder.
CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
The Bloodhound is loveable, affectionate, calm, and patient. They are great with children and get along well with other pets. With strangers they may seem somewhat reserved or shy. They can be extremely strong willed at times, particularly if they have found an interesting scent which requires immediate investigation!
CARE
The Bloodhound's coat should be brushed once or twice a week to keep it smooth, shiny and healthy. The coat does not require trimming. Bathing is only required as necessary but the ears should be cleaned on a regular basis.
TRAINING
In training a Bloodhound, one has to be patient, firm and consistent. Bloodhounds have a short attention span, so be sure to work on their focus. Bloodhounds tend to have a strong mind of their own so can seem difficult to train, however patient persistence will certainly pay off.
ACTIVITY
These dogs have a lot of energy and stamina. They enjoy a good run and need a lot of exercise. This breed is ideally suited to an active family who spend a lot of time outdoors.
