SIZE
The full-grown Bichon Frise should be no taller than 30cm and generally weigh between 4kg and 7kg. At such a dainty size, they make for an ideal indoor breed.
COAT
The adorable, pure white coat of the Bichon Frise is made of silky, fine, soft corkscrew curls that are between 7-10cm long. The Bichon Frise doesn’t noticeably shed - another plus for indoor living!
CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
Sociable and happiest when around people, Bichons are dogs designed for companionship. Gentle mannered, playful and affectionate, Bichons are a popular breed for the elderly and those looking for a dog to pamper every day. They get along well with children and can be a great family dog, provided there is enough time for grooming.
They are quite useful as a watchdog but must be trained to quiet down on command.
CARE
The poodle-like Bichon Frise coat needs to be brushed and combed for half an hour a day, and professionally groomed every four to six weeks. This should be started from an early age so that your Bichon becomes accustomed to brushing and sees it as quality time spent in your lap.
They adore human companionship and if left alone for long periods of time, the Bichon Frise may regress in house training and leave you a nasty surprise!
Be sure to regularly check your Bichon’s ears for infection and their undercoat for grass seeds, burs and ticks.
TRAINING
House training the Bichon Frise can be difficult so patience and perseverance are essential. Once this breed grasps the essentials, they are easily trained, especially when motivated by tasty treats.
ACTIVITY
As a classic lap dog, the Bichon Frise does not require much in the way of high-energy exercise. A daily walk should suffice and they will highly appreciate a romp in an off-leash park! If left neglected, your Bichon will become vocal, boisterous and may try to escape.
