Breed Information

The adorable Beagle is the type of hound you’ll find gnawing on your new shoes, then winning you back with unlimited affection, their desire to entertain and their happy-go-lucky attitude.  Popular among families and active singles, the Beagle makes for a great best friend with a big personality.

SIZE
As a sturdy, small hound, the Beagle should stand between 33-40cm. Most male beagles weigh 11-13kgs and the females about 9kg. The Beagle is a stocky little dog that is suitable for apartment living, but does require a lot of exercise if it’s to be an indoor dog.

COAT
The short, dense and weatherproof coat of the Beagle comes in any recognisable hound colour, other than liver, with a trademark tip of stern white on the top of a wagging tail.

CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
The Beagle is a merry, curious dog with a tail-wagging, gentle demeanour. Very much a pack dog, the Beagle desires nothing more than to be taken into your family with love and affection.
Their energetic willingness and merry attitude makes the Beagle a great best friend for children and this breed will generally get along well with other dogs.

CARE
The Beagle’s coat is low-maintenance and requires only an occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush and bathing in mild shampoo when required.
Being energetic with great stamina, they need plenty of exercise and a brisk daily walk is a minimum. Always walk your Beagle on a lead and make sure your fence is escape-proof as the overactive nose will quickly distract the Beagle and have them running away in search of game!
Check ears regularly for infection and keep nails trimmed short.

TRAINING
The easily distracted Beagle requires patient, firm training. Stay watchful and persistent and you will soon have an obedient, well-mannered Beagle.
The best method for training a Beagle is to tap into their insatiable appetite so focus on rewarding good behaviours with tasty treats!
As they are very inclined to follow their nose, it’s a good idea to buy animal scents and play tracking games as part of training to scratch your Beagle’s sniffing instincts.

ACTIVITY
It is essential that Beagles get extensive, daily exercise and are best suited to an active family. It’s important that your Beagle receives brisk daily walks with outdoor play and lots of playful interaction mixed with obedience training.
If their exercise needs are neglected, the Beagle will grow bored and restless and make serious escape attempts.
