If you have counter surfers in your household like I do, every day is an adventure in keeping pets safe and healthy. My kids and I work hard to keep medications, plants and household cleaners far out of the reach of our canine companions, but it's not so easy to dog proof the kitchen for one big potential danger: human food! If it's delicious to you, it's most likely delicious to your dog, and sometimes, that's a big problem. There are foods popping up on the poison control lists now that are on the "good" list for humans, but are reportedly a big no-no for our four footed friends.
Chocolate, Coffee, Caffeine These products all contain substances called methylxanthines, which are found in cacao seeds, the fruit of the plant used to make coffee and in the nuts of an extract used in some sodas. Note that baking chocolate and darker chocolate are more dangerous than milk chocolate. Overdose can lead to death.
Alcohol Alcoholic beverages and food products containing alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination, central nervous system depression, difficulty breathing, tremors, abnormal blood acidity, coma and death.
Avocado The leaves, fruit, seeds and bark of avocados contain Persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. A definite no no.
Macadamia Nuts Macadamia nuts are commonly used in many cookies and candies. However, they can cause fever and heart problems for your canine companion.
Grapes & Raisins Although the toxic substance within grapes and raisins is unknown, these fruits can cause kidney failure.
Yeast Dough Yeast dough can rise and cause gas to accumulate in your pet's digestive system. This can be painful and can cause the stomach or intestines to rupture. Because the risk diminishes after the dough is baked, pets can have small bits of bread as treats.
Onions, Garlic, Chives These vegetables and herbs can cause gastrointestinal irritation and could lead to red blood cell damage. Although cats are more susceptible, dogs are also at risk if a large enough amount is consumed.
Milk Because pets do not possess significant amounts of lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk), milk and other milk-based products cause them diarrhea or other digestive upset.
Salt Large amounts of salt can produce excessive thirst and urination, or even sodium ion poisoning in pets.
Other organisations add a few extras to the list like fruit pits and seeds. Experts on About.com claim apple seeds and pits from cherries, peaches and plums are full of cyanide, which can cause vomiting, breathing problems, heart problems and even coma. Don't forget the biggest issue with fruit pits is the obvious choking hazard if they are swallowed whole.
Some claim that the dog's digestive tract is so much shorter than a human's, that spoiled or moldy foods won't affect it. Vets say "not so", rotten food can contain botulism, and ethanol produced by decaying fruit. Some mold can contain toxins that cause muscle tremors and convulsions.
Keeping dogs out of trouble in the kitchen is no easy task. Training your dogs to "stay" when you put them in a down position is a great start, but it's best to keep them completely out of the room when you are cooking or eating. Keep all food off countertops, and out of lower cupboards when possible. Whenever the trash contains dangerous foods, make sure it's in a securely covered bin, or preferably, get it right out of the kitchen into a place where the dogs aren't allowed. If your house is like mine, you'll have one talented dog who can break into anything in spite of your best efforts, so make sure you have your vet's phone number, and an animal poison control number right by the phone just in case disaster strikes.
Maybe it's just coincidence that Americans Dorothy and Lavern Utley named their six-pound Chihuahua after the tiny fairy in "Peter Pan" Or maybe it's not. All they know she's safely home today, after she was scooped up by a wicked gust of wind and sent flying out of sight, just as though she had wings.
The couple was setting up a booth at an outdoor market last month in Michigan. Tinkerbell was standing on their platform trailer when a 100km per hour gust of wind blew the puppy up into the air and out of sight. Witnesses reported they had seen the little dog sailing over a nearby highway.
Imagine the horrifying image of watching your dog being swept away in front of your eyes! The odds of finding Tinkerbell alive were not on their side, but Dorothy and Lavern were not about to give up on their precious pet. They hired a pet psychic to help locate Tinkerbell. She sent them to a spot on the other side of the highway where the dog was last seen. 50 volunteers banded together to help the Utleys comb the woods. Two days after she sailed off, the puppy was found just over a kilometer away from the flea market. Tinkerbell was dirty and hungry, but very much alive. Her 72 year old "mum" told the Detroit News the dog "just went wild" when she caught sight of her.
Many people at the outdoor market were sure that the puppy could not have survived after being blown away, and being alone in the woods for two days. Joe Goldberg, manager of the outdoor market, told the newspaper the whole event was "phenomenal". After all, what's a fairy tale without a happy ending? [View full article]

We are very proud to express that all puppies for sale at Doggy in the Window are pure breed puppies from registered Australian breeders. There are many benefits of buying from a breeder, the obvious reason being the reliability and predictability of pure breeds that have had their characteristics, temperament and size documented for years. Another massive benefit that not all people are aware of is the wealth of knowledge and support that will be offered to you by the breeder.
From your first point of contact the breeder will assess the type of person you are and the lifestyle that you live. Although the character traits of a pure breed are a given, each puppy in the litter will still have a different personality. The breeder has spent ample time with the puppies since birth so knows very well the personality of each pup for sale. This allows for the breeder to make an accurate suggestion of which puppy is most suitable for you. For example if you have children the breeder might suggest the most confident or boisterous of the litter, whereas if perhaps you are retired the more quiet of the litter might be more suitable.
The benefits of dealing with a breeder don’t stop there! Once you have chosen your puppy, registered breeders are open to any questions you might have about training, health, characteristics or caring for your new fur baby. You will find that breeders are full of helpful advice about caring for your puppy, after all, they are experts of the breed.
Even two years on when your puppy is well and truly grown and part of the family, should you have any questions about your pet’s history or family, the breeder will be all too happy to hear from you and to see how their baby is doing! Knowing where and how your puppy has grown up since birth is also a lovely thought.
Buying a pure breed puppy from a registered breeder is the most simple, responsible and sensible way to take home your fur baby!
The time has come to credit the inspiration of our website. Written in 1952 this wonderful song sparks memories in us all. Sung beautifully by Patty Page this song is certainly one to stand the tests of time, and although times have changed, Patty’s reasoning for purchasing the puppy for sale is still relevant. Patty hopes to buy the puppy for her sweetheart who lives away from her in California, and she figures that if he has a fluffy companion he won’t feel so lonely whilst she’s away. Patty also points out how a loyal dog will scare away robbers!
So now we have a new way of asking how much is that doggy in the window, no longer do we need to ask store owners, but instead we can go directly to the breeders who care so much about their puppies finding a perfect new home. I’m fairly sure that if Patty put her case to one of our breeders she would not be disappointed. Rather than looking through the window of a pet store, you can now look through windows of your own computer, and find a beautiful companion suitable to your lifestyle.
If you’re feeling like a reminder of the old days or perhaps your child hood, take a look at Patty Page singing her world famous tune “How much is that Doggy in the Window”. I’ll have to agree with Patty that Gold Fish are no fun since you can’t take them for a walk. Try to ignore the fur Patty is draped in, remember it was the 50’s!
When you have made the all important decision to take home a puppy, you must first consider the type of dog most suitable to your life style. For example, what size of dog would suit you, the temperament, diet requirements, exercise requirements etc. Once you have answered these questions you can effectively research which pure breed puppy is for you. Why a pure breed? Because pure breeds offer consistency!
Consistency in pure breed puppies is an extremely valuable benefit, what this means is that once you have identified the qualities you would like (or wouldn't) in your dog, you can then confidently match these qualities to those of pure breed dogs who have had their character, temperament and heritage documented for centuries.
Choosing a pure breed pup allows you to know exactly what to expect when your baby grows into an adult dog, including size, appearance, grooming requirements, temperament and characteristics. These known factors ensure that you"re aware of the qualities of the breed, and can make an informed decision about whether this puppy will grow up to be suitable for your lifestyle.
Another very important factor to consider is that Pure Breed Puppies for sale from reputable breeders will be tested for any diseases relevant to that particular breed, and you will be told to look out for any breed specific ailments that might occur with time. The predictability of a Pure Breed Puppy allows people to make a responsible decision about the type of puppy who once grown up will still suit their apartment, family and circumstances.
If you've ever tried training a boisterous puppy or any dog for that matter, you know that perfect obedience is easier said than achieved. If only we could sit our dog"s down to an orientation session and show them this little fellow working his magic. Maybe with a demonstration our students would learn quicker!
Take a look at this gorgeous link where you can instruct the gorgeous dog to sit, roll over, down, stand, sing, dance, fetch, shake, play dead - even sneeze! Simply type the command and see your student perform.
Now that the ever important decision has been made (you have chosen a puppy to share the next 10-15 years of your life with!) it is imperative that you prepare for your puppy’s homecoming before he or she arrives. First impressions really do count, so you must do all that you can to ensure your puppy’s transition into your home is as smooth as possible. Preparing for your puppy includes purchasing the essentials such as food bowls and a comfy bed, but the preparation also involves sitting your household down and having a discussion of how you can work together to provide a calm, consistent and supportive new environment for your soon to arrive family member.
Shopping for initial supplies can be great fun, but try not to go overboard! You will need to begin with two bowls, (one for food, one for water) stainless steel can be a good option as it’s more difficult to knock over, and impossible for puppy teeth to chew up. Bedding is the next step, but before you go out and buy anything too pricey, keep in mind your puppy will not be toilet trained, and will most likely chew and chew and chew and chew! Instead you can start with either a more modest purchase, or simply an old blanket folded up either on the floor or in an open basket. Once your puppy is toilet trained and has outgrown his chewing phase, feel free to buy as beautiful and comfortable a bed as you wish!
Toys, bones and treats are next on your shopping list. As difficult as it might seem, you must restrain yourself from buying every toy in the store. If your puppy is overloaded with toys, it will be difficult for them to differentiate between what is theirs, and what is yours - eg. your shoes! As for bones, let the store know that you are looking for something suitable for a puppy, and they will advise you of your options – something in rawhide should do nicely. The treats are a very important purchase, but make sure your puppy likes them before you dash out and buy it in bulk! Don’t forget it’s not the size of the treat but your enthusiasm when sharing that’s the most effective training!
Other items of vital importance are a puppy collar and lead. The staff at your local store will be able to help you with sizes once you know the breed you have chosen. It’s also an excellent idea to have an ID tag with your phone number attached to the collar. Your puppy might not be leaving your house for a few weeks yet, but it’s best to get into good habits.
Puppy proofing your home is the next step in preparation. You must ensure that there are no loose electrical cords dangling in a tempting manner, and make sure there is nothing on the floor small enough to be swallowed and harm your puppy. You might also consider gates for blocking off certain rooms in your house, or even a play pen which will keep your puppy in the area that you specify. Playpens can be used both indoors and out.
Once you are satisfied that your home is ready for your new family member, sit back and count the sleeps till their arrival! Keep in mind that there is plenty more work to come, but the reward is most certainly worth it. Who could say no to unconditional love?
